Prof. Dr. Xuewu Gu
Curriculum Vitae: Prof. Dr. Xuewu Gu is Chair of East Asian Politics and Director of the Institute of East Asian Politics of Bochum University in Germany. He is also an honorary professor of the Shanghai Council for European Studies and a Non-Residential Senior Research Fellow of the Center for European Integration Studies of the University of Bonn.
Dr Gu was born on August 12, 1957, in Hubei, China. After his BA graduation in Information and Documentation Sciences at the Wuhan University in 1982, Dr Gu studied Political Science and International Relations in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1985 he received his Master Degree from the University of Cologne and in 1990 his PhD from the University of Bonn, with a dissertation on "Chemical Weapons and Germany".
From 1991 to 1998, Dr Gu served as Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Freiburg. In 1997, he completed his second dissertation ("Habilitation") investigating the triangle relations between China, Russia and the United States, and acquired the German qualification for a full professorship. He spent his sabbatical leave in the United States in 1995, acting as Visiting Scholar at the Center for Chinese Studies of University of California in Berkeley and as Research Fellow at Harvard University's Fairbank Center.
From 1998 to 1999, Dr Gu served as Acting Chair of East Asian and Pacific Studies at the University of Trier. In August 1999, he joined the Center for European Integration Studies of University of Bonn, acting as Senior Research Fellow directing the "Europe-Asia-Programme". In 2000 he was Research Fellow at Asia Research Centre of the London School of Economic and Political Science. In October 2002 Dr Gu was appointed the Chair of East Asian Politics and Director of the Institute of East Asian Politics at the Bochum University.
He is member of the German Council on Foreign Relations, and member of the German Society for Political Science.
